Members of the Moroccan community continue their prominent presence in the Spanish labor market, forming one of the largest foreign nationalities working in multiple sectors. With increasing interest in social protection issues, the topic of unemployment benefits stands out as one of the most prominent concerns, especially for those who lose their jobs before completing the full contribution period in the social security system.
According to data issued by the Spanish Public Employment Service, losing a job without reaching 360 days of contribution, which is the required period to qualify for full unemployment compensation, does not mean being deprived of any support. The authority provides a special allowance for individuals who have worked for at least 90 days and find themselves in a legal unemployment situation.
To qualify for this allowance, the applicant's monthly income must not exceed 915.75 euros, which represents 75 percent of the minimum professional wage adopted for 2026, excluding the proportional part of additional payments. The application must also be submitted within a maximum period of six months from the date of job loss, otherwise the application will be rejected.
The value of the support varies according to the duration of the benefit, as the amount is calculated based on the Public Multipurpose Income Index, known as IPREM. During the first six months, the beneficiary receives 570 euros per month, which is equivalent to 95 percent of the index value, before the amount decreases to 540 euros in the following six months, and then stabilizes at 480 euros starting from the second year until the end of the benefit period.
Regarding the duration of the allowance, it is linked to the number of contribution days and the applicant's family situation. A worker who has accumulated 90 days of contribution benefits for three months, and the period increases to four months for those who worked 120 days, and five months for those who reached 150 days, regardless of the presence of dependents. For those who have completed 180 days of contribution, the support period is set at six months if they have no family responsibilities, and can extend to 21 months if there are dependents.
The competent authorities clarify that contribution days are calculated only for periods designated for unemployment benefits within the general social security system or certain special systems, such as the agricultural and marine systems or vocational training contracts. They also emphasize the need to respect the legal deadlines for submitting the application, which do not exceed six months from the date of job loss.
These measures are part of a social protection system aimed at ensuring a minimum income for workers who have lost their jobs without meeting the conditions for full unemployment compensation.
