UAE Grants Blue Residency to Climate Experts Investors

UAE Launches 10-Year "Blue Residency" Visa for Climate Experts and Investors

The United Arab Emirates has announced the activation of the procedural system for granting the "Blue Residency" for 2026, a long-term residence visa extending for a full decade (10 years), aimed at attracting global elite sustainability specialists, scientists, and green economy investors. This step comes in implementation of the state's directives to strengthen its national sustainability agenda and offer unprecedented incentives for talents contributing innovative solutions to global climate change challenges.

The concerned authorities revealed that this visa is not limited to residency alone but extends to include a package of family and logistical benefits. It grants the holder the right to sponsor their family members (spouse, children, and parents) and grant them residencies of the same duration, in addition to sponsoring domestic helpers without strict numerical restrictions, provided financial capability and comprehensive health coverage are proven. The "Blue Residency," which is continuously renewable, is currently the strongest legal tool to ensure long-term stability for innovators in the renewable energy and environmental technology sectors.

Regarding eligibility criteria, the decision specified precise categories including creators who have received international environmental awards, academic researchers holding PhDs and Master's degrees in environmental sciences, and investors who have injected investments of no less than 2 million AED into national green projects. The decision also opened the opportunity for owners of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that achieve growth in the sustainability sector with annual revenues of one million AED, and inventors who possess patents serving climate goals, to apply for this category of residency.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP), in coordination with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, has begun receiving nomination and application requests via its digital platforms. Official sources confirmed the availability of a "temporary entry visa" for 180 days with multiple entries, specifically for applicants from outside the country to complete their procedures within the UAE with ease. It also offers the option for current Golden Visa holders to convert to the Blue Residency if their specializations match the new environmental criteria.

Observers believe that the "Blue Residency" represents a fundamental pillar in the UAE's vision for the future, through which the state seeks to transform into a global hub for environmental innovation. This step is expected to attract billions of dirhams in green investments and enhance international research cooperation on UAE soil, supporting national ambitions to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and promote a knowledge-based, sustainable economy.
